
What is telematics, or probably more accurately telemetries?
Telematics is applying some level of intelligence to an assets via sensor technology (GPS, Bluetooth), and sending the data obtained through the sensors via established networks (most likely GSM networks) to either ABAX, or to other machines/ systems.
How does that help the world, you say, and that is the right question – the industry has not been great at communicating usage beyond compliance (that is, you NEED to do something that requires this technology).
But, let us start at the very basic – applying telematics to your asset (car, machine, tool, or any other imaginable, moveable asset) will at the very least give you its location. This will also, by extension, give you where it has been.
Location, not the most complex data point, right? But, significantly more intelligent that NOT knowing where the asset is, I am sure you would agree.
Can Telematics help save this world? I am just getting started…..
Let me give an example (and please stay with me here):
Informal surveys amongst our over 40,000 customer suggests that an average “worker” (handyman, construction worker, operational public servant, almost anyone working with assets) spends 15 minutes a day finding an asset. That is 1/30th of a 7,5 hours work day – not bad you say, but still 5 hours for that poor “worker” in a 20 day month, or 55 hours in an 11 month year.
Let’s extrapolate – if the company has 5 “operational employees” the number would be 25 hours a month, or 275 a year….
A mid-sized Norwegian construction company perhaps have 400 employees, again being conservative let us say 50% of those are “operational” – the numbers would be 50 hours a day, 1000 hours a month and a whooping 11000 hours a year.
I could go on (and will in the next article), but you get my point…
Save 50 hours a day, 1000 hours a month and a whooping 11,000 hours a year.
If we (again being conservative) estimate that an hourly invoiceable rate is Euro 50 (or NOK/ SEK 500) that would indicate that there are inefficiencies worth (and I had to use my calculator here) Euro 550,000 (NOK/ SEK 5,5 million) a year….in a medium sized Norwegian construction company!!!
These are inefficiencies that would save jobs, save businesses from bankruptcies, improve cash flow and profits, which again can be used for reinvestment and new jobs, and secure tax income for under pressure public coffins.
